The Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA-Kenya) in collaboration with Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) held a public forum dubbed “Future of Work in the Era of Digitalization” on Thursday, 16th April, 2019 at the Hilton Hotel – Nairobi.
The public forum discussed digitalization and decent jobs in three questions; Under Kenya’s manufacturing strategy for development in the era of digitalization, what opportunities exist in creating decent jobs? What role would the Trade Unions and Government play to formalize the informal sector? What is the role of stakeholders in ensuring decent jobs creation in the era of digitalization?
Discussions were led by Prof. Attiya Waris of the University of Nairobi, Mr. Jackson Wambua of Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM) and Ms. Evelyne Mungai of the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA-Kenya).
Speaking during the forum, Mr. Jackson Wambua said that slow uptake in adapting technology has led to increased competition in products’ production from other countries especially within the East African Community. He further said that digitalization is key in staying competitive as this is the only way to bring technology in the free trade area agreements.
Mr. Kwame Owino, chief executive officer at IEA acknowledged that technology has its negative impact as it will lead to loss of jobs but on the other hand he said that technology has the potential of creating high quality jobs.
