The Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA-Kenya) held a public forum on the Traffic Challenge in the City of Nairobi-Economic Implications and Possible Solutions on Thursday, 16th May, 2019 at the Sarova Stanley Hotel.
The session was moderated by Mr. Kwame Owino, Chief Executive Officer at the Institute of Economic Affairs. The presentations were made by Mr. Chrispine Odour, Programme Officer at IEA-Kenya; Mr. Martin Eshiwani representing the Ministry of Transport; Mr. Peter Murima, Chairman of Motorists Association of Kenya; Mr. Simon Kimutai, Chairman of Matatu Owners Association and Ms. Mary Kiarie, Deputy OCPD, Traffic Nairobi County.
Speaking during the public forum, Mr. Simon Kimutai said that one major cause of traffic congestion in Nairobi is poor design of the roads and drainage systems. His sentiments were echoed by Ms. Mary Kiarie who said that roundabouts also contribute to traffic congestion. In addition, Mr. Chrispine Odour said that “Kenya as a nation needs to oversee the coordination of land use, transport infrastructure and service planning to ensure the provision of adequate and well-structured road space”.
Speaking during the same event, Mr. Kwame Owino said that public service vehicles would be more efficient at reducing traffic congestion than the personal vehicles that have designated parking spots in city streets. “A hard-nosed, facts-based policy aimed at reducing the average times spent in traffic by commuters would show that public service vehicles are a superior option to private automobile”, quipped Kwame.
The forum was interdisciplinary with participation from economists and other social scientists, activists and representatives from both the private sector and civil society organizations, the media and the public at large.
