The Institute of Economic Affairs and Institute for Development Studies held a Joint Seminar on Public Debt in Kenya

The Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA-Kenya) and Institute for Development Studies (IDS) held a half day workshop dubbed “Public Debt in Kenya” on Thursday, 25th April, 2019 at the University of Nairobi. The aim of the seminar was to provide a comparison of domestic versus external debt and provide an overall analysis of the country’s debt sustainability, and what this means to the Kenyan economy. 

The session was moderated by Prof. Winnie Mitulla of Institute for Development Studies. The presentations were by IEA-Kenya staff lead by Mr. Kwame Owino, Chief Executive Officer and Noah Wamalwa on Analysis of trends in Kenya’s public debt.

The seminar brought together professors, lecturers and students from the University of Nairobi as well as the alumni of the aforesaid institution to discuss the trends, affordability and sustainability of the country’s public debt which is growing at an alarming rate. In his closing remarks, Prof. Karuti Kanyinga, Director at the Institute for Development Studies commended the IEA for making the presentation and requested Mr. Kwame Owino to take two students every week from the economics department and train them on how to collect and analyze data on public policy issues.
