The number of the Week: 2.1, this is the factor by which domestic debt has grown in the last five years. 

Domestic debt has nearly doubled in the last five years (2013-2018)

  • Between 1999 and 2013, Kenya borrowed a trillion shillings domestically, with an average of Ksh 77 billion borrowed yearly. 
  • Between 2013 and 2018, Kenya borrowed 1.5 trillion shillings domestically, with an average of Ksh 260 billion annually. 
  • In the last 19 years (1999-2018), Kenya has been borrowing an average of 120 billion annually. 
  • The increased domestic borrowing by the Government crowds out the private sector from borrowing in the local market.
