The African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) which was signed into law, on May 18th 2000, opened a new trading opportunity to the Sub-Saharan African countries (SSA). This initiative provides a wide range of products from eligible SSA countries with duty free and quorta free access to the U.S.

In reviewing the performance of the budget in the first quarter, it becomes evident that this budget has as many contradictions as that of the last year, leading to the conclusion that lessons from last year were not built into the current budget. Among the main contradictions is that while the country is in a sustained recession, government unwisely promised to maintain a tight monetary policy.

The treaty on Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) has led to a rise in debates about the proper place of intellectual property within the overall industrial and development policy of developing countries generally and Kenya in particular.
