The main goal of the special projects is to apply IEA resource base to respond to information gaps in the public policy space. Objectives of the special projects are
- To produce a bi-annual state of nation assessment
- To disseminate and facilitate debate on the research conducted by the IEA
- To conduct economic research and facilitate debates in response to short term demands of key partner organizations
- To build an internal pool of skills to conduct economic research.
The main components of the special projects in IEA are State of the nation assessment, judicial reforms project, Fact books, statistical bulletins and Research.
State of the Nation Assessment-AGENDA Series
The state of the nation is also known as the AGENDA series. The AGENDA series researches and analyses the prevailing economic, legal and social political situations and provides in-depth analysis and policy challenges for the issues. This is a sector-by-sector review, which is dedicated to different sectors of the economy. The outcome of the agenda series is a publication. Available in the website is a soft copy of the last publication of the AGENDA series, The Kenya at the Crossroads Scenarios Compendium.
Judicial reforms project
The judicial reform project aims at facilitating judicial reform in Kenya. The project undertakes activities focusing on the implication of the judicial structure on accountability and service delivery. This judiciary programme proposes to influence the structural reform of the judiciary through knowledge assembly and research, with a three-part emphasis on: the design of a comprehensive and inclusive judicial reform framework for Kenya, including matters covered under the wider constitutional reform process and the economics of judicial reform in Kenya. The project is an “incubator project” since it’s a new area that IEA has ventured into recently
Fact books and statistical bulletin
The fact book has information from sources such as the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), the Ministry of Finance and Planning, and other public sources on population, health, and education. The information is compiled so that you get much information at a glance. The latest publication of the Fact Book was published in 2002 and is available on the website. The book is entitled, “The Little Fact Book: Social Economic & Political Profiles of Kenya’s Districts”
Consultantancy and Research
The Institute of Economic Affairs is often approached by other institutions to carry out research on their behalf. This research work falls under special projects. The aim of this facility is to build institutional sustainability and provide the necessary resources for the expansion of IEA activities into new areas as opportunities arise.
